Her Last Holiday by CL Taylor

You come to the retreat to be healed. You don’t expect to die.

Two years ago, Fran’s sister Jenna disappeared on a wellness retreat in Gozo that went terribly wrong.

Tom Wade, the now infamous man behind Soul Shrink Retreats, has just been released from prison after serving his sentence for the deaths of two people. But he has never let on what happened to the third victim: Jenna.

Determined to find out the truth, Fran books herself onto his upcoming retreat – the first since his release – and finds herself face to face with the man who might hold the key to her sister’s disappearance. The only question is, will she escape the retreat alive? Or does someone out there want Jenna’s secrets to stay hidden?

The master of suspense is back. Prepare yourself for the latest heart-in-mouth rollercoaster ride from the Sunday Times bestseller.

Fran's sister has been missing, presumed dead, for two years, ever since her retreat ended up in disarray with two participants dead. The man behind the retreat was jailed, but now he's out and running a new retreat. This is Fran's chance to find out what really happened back then.

I'd just like to note; unlike the blurb, it's Fran's mother who books her on to the retreat, and harangues her until she agrees to go. Her mother has had some bad experiences, I'll give her that, but her behaviour towards her daughter is abominable. I really hated her.

Sadly, that was the most feeling I had for anyone. We have two time periods, jumping back and forth, and three points of view, moving between the three with each chapter. I never really felt like I was with anyone long enough to get to know them, and the jumping time periods disoriented me. I never do very well with them, although I know some readers love them.

I felt like everything was taking a very long time, too. It all just seemed to drag. It's a shame, because I've really enjoyed other books by CL, but this one just didn't click with me.

I think you will enjoy it if you like a slower paced thriller. It's well written and I loved the descriptions of the scenery. I'll have to look up Gozo now! It seems like it's going on my bucket list.

A well written book, just not for me sadly.

Her Last Holiday publishes on the 29th of April, 2021. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
