The Supermarket Ghost by Gordon Snell

Maria thinks it is going to be a dull summer until she meets a strange boy with an unusual request.

An exciting and unpredictable ghost story for younger readers that's a little scary, but not too scary!
Every year, O'Brien run a competition where they invite schoolchildren to submit new cover designs for classic children's books. The winner gets his or her design printed on a new run of the book. This year, the title was The Supermarket Ghost by Gordon Snell. (Who also wrote a series of books about a talking computer; ho hum now, but the realm of science fiction in the 80s!)

The Supermarket Ghost is a fairly simple story; greasy businessman cheats family out of store, family is accidentally killed...wait, what? That's right; this children's book is about a ghost coming back to get revenge! Luckily, it's all handled quite light heartedly and the revenge itself only takes one morning's work.

It's a nice story, everyone ends up happy (apart from the greasy business man, but he's so boo hiss you won't care) and as well as the winning cover, the runner up and some honorable mentions are printed inside. I don't envy the judges who had to choose between them!

A brilliant read, a great competition. Fantastic all around.
