The Journey by Hanako Clulow and Jonny Marx

Follow a herd of zebras on an epic migration across the African plains.

As the sun beats down on the scorched wilderness, these brave zebras trundle on. Who knows what dangers lie ahead or what the herd may find at the end of this extraordinary journey?

This lovely picture book follows a herd of zebra as they migrate across the plains. They're joined by some animals and have to avoid others on their travels. The story is told in rhyme, with just a couple of lines on each page; short enough for even quite young children, while there's enough detail in the pictures to satisfy an older child. The back cover gives other animals that appeared in the illustrations and challenges readers to find them all.

The information at the front about migrating is really helpful; I had no idea zebras migrate at all, let alone such huge distances. And I love the style of illustration; very true to life with just a couple of cartoony elements. My favourite spread shows the zebras confusing crocodiles by crossing a river at two different spots, but all the spreads are lovely. This is a book children will enjoy for a long time. Really nice.

The Journey publishes on the 1st October, 2020.
