The Celts by John Farrelly

The Celts arrived in Ireland around 700BCE and dominated the bronze and iron ages. Even after Christianity, Irish Celts retained much of their unique culture. Accessible, anarchic and crammed to the rafters with cartoons and wacky illustrations, this book is as deadly as Irish history gets!

The second in the series, this follows The Vikings and looks at the Celts in Ireland, covering all aspects of their life; religion, day to day life, fighting and folklore. It's all garnished with comics, caricatures and a wonderful Eastenders pastiche, complete with doof doofs.

John has a gift for making comedy out of serious history and inserting levity at just the right moment. Even his author's note made me grin. I love that he was honest about the fact that we just don't know a lot of things, that we're filling in gaps with reasonable guesses and logical ideas. I can't wait to see what part of Irish history he takes on next. Whatever it is, I'll be eager to read it.

Happy #BookBirthday to this title, which publishes today, 14th September 2020!
