Afraid of the Dark by Sarah Shaffi, Isabel Otter and Lucy Farfort

Today we are moving house but my new room is strange and scary. I don't think I'll ever be able to sleep…

A gentle first experience story about new beginnings, friendship and finding ways to cope with fear.

What an absolutely beautiful book. Amy, her father and her dog are moving to a new home. Amy's new room has strange shadows and funny noises and she can't settle. Luckily, with the help of her father, a friendly librarian and the children next door, Amy realises that new things can be fun as well as scary and that she's not alone.

The illustrations are beautiful, all soft colours and gentle washes. I love that, in the scenes of Amy's bedroom at night, we can see what's casting the scary shadow even though she can't. It's an absolutely gorgeous book, perfect for sharing with children about to move house, who have just moved house or who are afraid of the dark. And even if they don't fit in to those categories, it's still a beautiful story with fabulous illustrations. I'll be sharing this one as widely as I can.

Afraid of the Dark publishes on the 1st October, 2020.
