Glassheart by Katherine Orton

Through the glass, the magic is waiting... Nona and her uncle travel everywhere together, replacing stained-glass windows in war-torn buildings. When a mysterious commission takes them to the lonely moors of Dartmoor, Nona discovers a wild and powerful magic which threatens everything. Can Nona protect those she loves – even if it means fighting darkness itself? A beautifully imaginative and rich adventure about determination, courage and the power of love, set in the aftermath of World War Two.

Katharine has a way of mixing magic with the real world to produce something very beautiful, and eerie. This story, set in the wilds of Dartmoor, explores the power of memory, of friendship and of standing up for what you believe in.

The descriptions are wonderful, really evocative and lovely. The magic was carefully thought out, and Nona is a wonderful character. I mean, Castor is clearly the best, but Nona is amazing. I loved their friendship and loyalty towards each other.

Katharine is establishing herself as a name to watch in middle grade fiction, and I'll be watching out eagerly to see what she does next.

Glassheart publishes on the 5th November, 2020.
