Oliver Jeffers' books are always beautiful. Here we Are! was especially amazing. This book doesn't quite touch those heights, but it's as close an anything could possibly get, and it's only because Here was so far above everything else.
Both Here and Build were born out of the birth of Oliver's child. There's a dreamy gentleness about this one, but it's much more...I'm going to say 'imaginary' than Here, although it's not quite the word I want. Build features the parent/child duo driving to the moon, building walls against ogres and witches and then inviting them to tea. It's an absolutely beautiful story and illustrates perfectly all the things parents want to be able to provide for their children.
As always there's plenty to examine in the illustrations; if I tried to talk about them we'd be here all day, so just take my word for it and plan some time to really study them. This isn't a book to read and put down; this one needs proper mulling over, examining, coming back to again and again. It's sure to be a standout this Christmas.
