Reclaim the Stars is a collection of bestselling and acclaimed YA authors that take the Latin American diaspora to places fantastical and out of this world. From princesses warring in space, to the all too-near devastation of climate change, to haunting ghost stories in Argentina, and mermaids off the coast of the Caribbean. This is science fiction and fantasy that breaks borders and realms, and proves that stories are truly universal.
Authors include Vita Ayala, David Bowles, Daniel José Older, J.C. Cervantes, Sara Faring, Romina Garber, Isabel Ibañez, Anna-Marie McLemore, Yamile Saied Méndez, Nina Moreno, Circe Moskowitz, Maya Motayne, Linda Raquel Nieves Pérez, Claribel A. Ortega, Mark Oshiro, Lilliam Rivera and Zoraida Córdova.
Short story collections are often tricky. It can be difficult to fit a whole story into the short story format if you're more used to novels; the tone can be hard to get right; whole collections can be dragged down by a bad story.
This isn't the worst collection I've read, but it isn't the best either, sadly. More of the stories are ok or bad than are good, in my opinion. The good ones are very good, but I found myself skimming quite a few.
I thought some of the stories were very imaginative and well written. However, some of them felt like short snippets of a longer story. There were some that fit the short story format beautifully, though.
Overall, I enjoyed this, but I think other readers will like it better.
Reclaim the Stars publishes on the 15th February, 2022. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
