The Shop of Impossible Ice Creams by Shane Hegarty and Jeff Crowther

Limpet’s mum is opening an ice-cream shop, full of her favourite new flavours: mushroom and tuna ice cream, anyone? Roast parsnip and gravy?

Limpet’s not sure about this. He likes a nice, safe life. His favourite ice-cream flavour is vanilla.

But when wicked Mr Fluffy arrives with his Mega Emporium of Amazing and Spectacular Ice Creams, Limpet knows he’s got to fight back. And there are magic ingredients on his doorstep which can solve all his worries, if only he can get the recipe just right …

Books for this age group are so inventive. I'm endlessly amazed at the things writers come up to keep kids engaged and reading (and learning sneaky lessons without realising it!) In this case it's really weird ice cream ingredients (although I'm a little unclear on whether the ice cream is actually made with those ingredients, or just designed to look like them, the way you can get cakes that look like footballs?)

Limpet learns an important lesson during the book - that even when the thing you've been dreading happens, it's often not as bad as you think it is. This is a great lesson for any child (or adult blogger/bookseller/reviewer) who tends to worry about things, a problem much larger now than it was two years ago. The lesson is slid into place so well that kids may not notice it until they think about it later, which is always great - no one likes to be hit over the head with a moral!

The illustrations are brilliant and really help to bring the story to life. I loved seeing Mr Huff glaring from his van, or the chaos causing seagulls flying around!

This is the first of a series and I can't wait to read more of Limpet's - sorry, Liam's! - adventures, the magic fairy fruit, and his mother's impossible ice creams. Not to mention whatever Mr Huff gets up to next!

The Shop of Impossible Ice Creams publishes on the 9th of June, 2022. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
