Happytown must be Destroyed by James Harris

For fans of My Brother is a Superhero and The Demon Headmaster comes an outrageously funny story of brain control, friends, enemies and saving the world, even if you don’t really want to.

*From the award-winning writer of The Unbelievable Biscuit Factory*

Leeza’s parents are ordinary. Unfit, grumpy, a bit embarrassing. Totally normal, right?

Until today. Today they are jogging. Eating salads and enjoying them. Smiling all the time. They’re happy. Really, really happy. Who could complain about that?

Leeza, that’s who.

Because it looks like someone’s brainwashing everyone in town. Who’s going to save the world? Oh no! It looks like it might have to be Leeza.

OK then. Let’s do this. You coming?

Warning for parents; this is a pretty gross book. That of course means that kids will love it, but do be aware!

As well as being gross, it's really funny, and - in some aspects at least - very true to life. Leeza has trouble deciding things, because she doesn't want to miss out on the things she's not having. That feels very authentic! There's the usual cast of Heroine, Quirky SideKick, Bully, Misunderstood Child, Embarrassing Parents  - I don't say this as a complaint, but rather to say that kids will recognise the characters as they read.

Kids are definitely going to enjoy this weird, gross, funny story, and it will leave them looking for more. And possibly chanting in unison while wearing yellow, so really, it's a win-win!

Happytown Must Be Destroyed publishes on the 14th of April, 2022. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
