The Chime Seekers by Ross Montgomery

Step into a world of faerie tricks and hidden danger... When an evil faerie steals Yanni's baby sister and swaps her for a Changeling, Yanni is swept into a dangerous race against time to get her back.
For faeries delight in tricks and rescuing her won't be easy. With the help of his cousin, Amy, and the reluctant Changeling, Yanni must travel to goblin palaces and battle-swept oceans, discovering ancient treasures and secrets along the way. Yanni will need every drop of courage and even a few tricks of his own, if he's to outwit the faerie and save his sister...

Ok, I can't be the only reviewer who was thinking of Labyrinth while reading this, right? (Not a diss, I love that movie.) Was I the only one thinking that Sarah actually got off really really lightly? Jareth was mean and capricious but he wasn't cruel the way Lord Renwin is here.

Ross weaves different parts of the plot together smoothly and with ease; I saw a couple of the Chekhov's Guns coming, but then I'm rather older than the target audience, and a couple of things still surprised me. One plot point near the end didn't make a lot of sense to me, but I probably missed something - I will reread as soon as the book's released, as my proof copy has been wished off me by another bookseller now!

Yanni goes through some great character development, too. Although his feelings at the start weren't completely unjustified, he does realise that he's been exaggerating them, and things seem set to get better afterwards. I would love to read a follow up to this, if Ross has any more ideas! I'm sure there must be more he could explore.

This could be a great movie - the signpost is maybe the best children's character I've met in a while - and I think kids are really going to enjoy it.

The Chime Seekers publishes on the 4th of November, 2021. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
