Swim Little Otter by Tom McCaughren and Erika McGann and Shannon Bergin

Poor Little Otter can’t swim.

The deep, dark river is just too scary.

But he has to learn to swim or he won’t be a real otter.

Maybe his new friend Tom Cat can help …

PRE-READING

Last year, Run Home, Little Fox by this team was one of O’Brien’s bestselling titles, so hopes are high for another beautiful picture book!

POST-READING

This is a sweet story with shades of His First Flight, as Little Otter sets out to overcome his fear of the water. Along the way, he meets several other animals, and the illustrations really make the most of the beautiful riverbank and the birds and animals who live there.

The moment when Ollie instinctively plunges into the water to save Tom Cat is wonderful. Sometimes you don't know what you're capable of until someone needs you. And perhaps being a “real” otter has a little less to do with what you can do and a little more to do with what you're willing to try.

A lovely picture book, full of nature, colour and the quiet magic of discovering the world around you.

RECOMMENDATIONS

If you enjoy picture books that celebrate nature and little characters finding their courage, this one is worth a look. For another story about a young bird learning to find their wings, try His First Flight.

TV pairing: The Wind in the Willows — for gentle riverside adventures and a world full of animal neighbours.

MUSIC PAIRING

“Three Little Birds” — Bob Marley & The Wailers. A little reassurance goes a long way!

VIBE CHECK

  • Colour palette: River blues, leafy greens, sunshine yellow and warm woodland browns.

  • Soundtrack: Birdsong, rustling reeds and the gentle burble of running water.

  • Season: A bright spring morning by the river.

  • Mood: Gentle, reassuring and full of wonder.

  • Scent: Fresh water, damp earth and wildflowers.

Swim Little Otter publishes on 19 October. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
