When Tasha builds a snow girl with her grandpa, all she wants is for her to be real. If only wishes on snow could come true... Then Tasha meets Alyana, a friend made of wishes, starlight, snowfall and magic. But when your best friend is made of winter, what do you do when spring comes?
Sophie Anderson has been quietly building a reputation for writing beautiful stories based on folk and fairy tales, and this will be her crowning work. (Until her next one.) Loosely based on the Russian folk character the Snow Maiden, this is a beautiful tale of family love, growing up and letting go when it's time.
Tasha is a wonderful character, suffering a kind of PTSD after a family misadventure, withdrawing into herself and making her world small and safe. However, she desperately wants to break out, and Alyana gives her a chance to do that, step by step and with some forwards and backwards.
My proof version doesn't have the artwork we're promised will be in the final version, but I'm very excited to see it - the cover is enough to whet my appetite and I think they will suit the tone beautifully.
This is a wonderful story for a chilly winter's night and will hopefully get a few people excited to check out some Russian folktales!
