The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown

If you could open a door to anywhere, where would you go?

In New York City, bookseller Cassie Andrews is living an unassuming life when she is given a gift by a favourite customer. It's a book - an unusual book, full of strange writing and mysterious drawings. And at the very front there is a handwritten message to Cassie, telling her that this is the Book of Doors, and that any door is every door.

What Cassie is about to discover is that the Book of Doors is a special book that bestows an extraordinary powers on whoever possesses it, and soon she and her best friend Izzy are exploring all that the Book of Doors can do, swept away from their quiet lives by the possibilities of travelling to anywhere they want.

But the Book of Doors is not the only magical book in the world. There are other books that can do wondrous and dreadful things when wielded by dangerous and ruthless individuals - individuals who crave what Cassie now possesses.

Suddenly Cassie and Izzy are confronted by violence and danger, and the only person who can help them is, it seems, Drummond Fox. He is a man fleeing his own demons - a man with his own secret library of magical books that he has hidden away in the shadows for safekeeping. Because there is a nameless evil out there that is hunting them all . . .

Because some doors should never be opened.

What a beautiful book this is, inside and out. I have a lot of feelings, so I'm switching to bullet points.

  • First of all, look at that cover
  • It's perfect
  • All that blue and gold
  • and the books of course
  • Big part of the story, books
  • You know what this is a bit like
  • An old miniseries called The Lost Room
  • (well not that old, 2006)
  • In The Lost Room, *something* weird happens in a hotel room and all the *stuff* in it gets weird powers
  • People hunt and buy and trade and kill for them
  • The books are like that here
  • (except there's less Elle Fanning, but I guess she could be Cassie)
  • (I assume someone is working on an adaptation for this?)
  • (If not why not?)
  • The books have some really inventive powers
  • And they are used in inventive ways
  • There's also a lot of wibbly wobbly timey wimey
  • So be prepared for that
  • I mean it's all really well explained, and I've seen far more confusing ones
  • It still might catch a few people though
  • And there are some beautifully heartfelt pieces
  • No spoilers, but I definitely did cry
  • (I always cry, but this was proper crying)
  • No spoilers so there's not much more I can say
  • Except you really should read this
  • It will change you
  • In the good way, I promise

The Book of Doors publishes on the 15th of February, 2024 in the UK, and on the 13th of February, 2024 in the US (no cover image yet.) I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
