The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Avery's fortune, life, and loves are on the line in the game that everyone will be talking about.

To inherit billions, all Avery Kylie Grambs has to do is survive a few more weeks living in Hawthorne House. The paparazzi are dogging her every step. Financial pressures are building. Danger is a fact of life. And the only thing getting Avery through it all is the Hawthorne brothers. Her life is intertwined with theirs. She knows their secrets, and they know her.

But as the clock ticks down to when Avery will become the richest teenager on the planet, trouble arrives in the form of a visitor who needs her help - and whose presence in Hawthorne House could change everything. It soon becomes clear that there is one last puzzle to solve, and Avery and the Hawthorne brothers are drawn into a dangerous game against an unknown and powerful player.

Secrets upon secrets. Riddles upon riddles. In this game, there are hearts and lives at stake-and there is nothing more Hawthorne than winning.

I can't wait until a fan produces a family tree as of the end of this book. I'm a very visual person, I don't always follow very well when connections are described instead of shown, and there are so many new connections and discoveries here.

Oh, wait, was that a spoiler? Whatever. Y'all aren't starting with this book (I hope - please don't start with this one!), you know what's coming.

I've read and very much enjoyed the first two books in this series. Unfortunately I didn't have time to reread them before this one, which is a shame as, although I did enjoy this, I'd forgotten some of the details since reading Legacy. However, I was able to follow what was going on - Barnes has made Avery very introspective in this book and she spends a lot of time thinking about things that happened in previous volumes, which is very handy.

I know that some people feel very strongly about the romances in this series. I didn't really have any opinion, but I did like the way it ended. There are some very clever moments and scenes in this book. Avery has changed and really grown, and I'm here for all the moments when she realised how much power she had - not just wealth, but real power.

I said it on the last book, and I stick to it - I can't wait until this series is picked up for a TV show!

The Final Gambit published on the 30th of August, 2022 in the US (top image) and will be released on the 1st of September, 2022 in the UK (lower image). I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
