Horror Heights: The Slime, by Bec Hill

Connie hasn’t found her talent yet, but at least she has her slime collection – if it’s gooey, she’s got it! She hopes that by adding a few extra ingredients to a simple recipe she will uncover a talent for slime-making, but alas, all she uncovers is a hot, stinky mess which ends up in the bin. It’s shaping up to be another uneventful weekend … until her failed slime experiment wakes her up the next morning. It’s alive! And can talk! And is named… Big.

Big adores Connie and wants to protect her from everything at all times, which is very sweet. At first. But when it gets bigger, grows teeth and threatens to eat her friends and father, can Connie uncover her TRUE talents in order to protect everything from THE SLIME?

This is the first in a new series pitched as 'Goosebumps for a new generation'. It's funny, well illustrated and tells a good story. The conceit is a little like the old Fear Street novels; Bec has discovered a town where a lot of scary, spooky things happen, and has committed to writing them all down to share with us. Which is very kind, really!

This story is a great start, introducing us to some fantastic characters. I'm not sure yet if characters will carry across the books, but if they do these are great ones to bring along, and there's a hook at the end of this one that will guarantee kids are eager to pick up the next novel to find out what happens next. (I'm quite eager myself!)

A brilliant novel for a child newly reading on their own, or even a bit older than that. A great start to a series - I can't wait to see how it continues!

The Slime publishes on the 30th September, 2021. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
