Desa Kincaid Bounty Hunter by RS Penney

Desa Kincaid has spent the last ten years in pursuit of a man whose experiments have killed over a dozen people.

Blessed with the power to transform ordinary objects into devastating weapons, she journeys through trading ports, backwater towns, forests, deserts and the haunted remains of a dead city.

But can she stop her enemy before he unleashes something terrible on the world?

The first in this series mixes magic with Western tropes to create something quite unique in my experience. Desa uses magic to create bullets, knives and belt buckles with different effects; heating up, cooling down, letting her increase or decrease gravity. She uses all of these to great effect in her work as a bounty hunter as she searches for the man who betrayed her order years ago.

I enjoyed reading this; it's well written and clever, and Desa is a great character. I did think it took a while for the backstory to become clear - for instance, when Marcus shows up he clearly has history with Desa, but we have no idea what it is for a long time - but I figured it all out eventually, and it didn't affect the story too much.

I really enjoyed the different effects Desa achieves with her 'magic'. (They don't call it magic, but I'm using that for simplicity's sake.) It's very clever and not something I've seen anywhere else.

It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, but so do most books nowadays...

A really clever, well thought out novel, first in a series.
