Max always felt too ordinary for the magical village of Lampton. No place more so than her mum's bookshop, where the recommendations are more than just a matter of taste - they're magic.

When Max's mum dies suddenly, she leaves her daughter Lamplight Books and makes one last wish: that Max would spend a year working in the bookshop before she sells it.

Max has no desire to uproot her busy life in the city to return to a place that always made her feel inadequate, but she can't ignore her mum's last request. So she decides on a trial run of two weeks - if she can't even last that long, then a year would be impossible...

This is a wonderfully cosy story about the transformative power of books. Lamplight Books feels like the kind of place every reader secretly wishes existed - where stories don’t just entertain, they guide people toward the next chapter of their lives. Watching Max reconnect with the shop, the village, and her mother’s legacy is genuinely touching, and the theme of “the right book at the right time” shines throughout the story.

It surprised me by…
…how much it felt like the perfect comfort read. The pacing is gentle, the characters are warm, and the story has a quiet optimism that makes it feel like a hug in book form. I could easily imagine this as a Hallmark-style film - and I mean that in the most affectionate way possible. It’s heartfelt, hopeful, and full of bookish magic, and I’d happily return to Lampton if the author writes more stories in this world.
