Kid Potato by Neil Coslett

✦ BLURB ✦

Kid Potato (aka Spuddy) is just a regular kid . . . except he’s a potato. Okay, sometimes weird stuff DOES happen. Like the alien invasion. Or when he was almost swallowed by a robot toilet. Or that time his finger turned radioactive.

Join Spudbert and his eccentric school friends Chomp and Raven as they embark on ridiculous adventures. From helping an alien who crash-lands inside Chomp’s head to doing a science project with Kid Evil (rumor has it that he doesn’t even wear socks!), the absurd fun never stops!

“Being a regular kid is hard enough. Try doing it as a potato.”

PRE-READING

I had no idea what I was walking into - the cover promised weirdness, and it turns out I’m very easy to persuade when illustrations are involved. Funny + chaotic + pictures? Sold.

POST-READING

As I thought...
Perfect for that gap between Dog Man and Wimpy Kid. The short, snappy stories keep things moving, and Spuddy’s bizarre misadventures make it impossible to get bored.

It surprised me by...
The puns. Oh, the puns. A few had me laughing in that “I’m not supposed to enjoy this as much as I do” way. Kids will adore them. Parents will groan and then immediately reread them.

RECOMMENDATIONS

๐Ÿ“š Book: Daisy and the Trouble With… — the same brand of delightful chaos and everyday absurdity
๐Ÿ“บ TV: SpongeBob SquarePants — surreal, silly, and absolutely committed to the bit

MUSIC PAIRING

๐ŸŽต Featured Song: Superman Theme — for Spuddy’s heroic leaps into nonsense, danger, and questionable decision-making

๐ŸŽถ Vibe Album: Flight of the Conchords (self-titled) — quirky, silly, shamelessly absurd, and happy to lean into the gag every single time

๐ŸŽง Artist Recommendation: They Might Be Giants — the kings of fun-but-smart weirdness

VIBE CHECK

  • Colour Palette: Russet brown, slime-green, and neon alien purple

  • Soundtrack: Zany cartoon sound effects with bursts of trumpets

  • Season: Late spring - that moment when kids start getting ideas

  • Mood: Chaotic, giggly, and gloriously nonsensical

  • Scent: Crayons crushed into a school desk + freshly microwaved jacket potato

TAROT CARD PULLED

Knight of Swords — Everyday Witch Tarot
A male witch on a broomstick, sword brandished, charging at a flock of birds - the perfect embodiment of Spuddy energy. This Knight doesn’t stop to think, doesn’t wait for the world to make sense, and dives headfirst into chaos. Just like our potato hero, he’s fearless, unpredictable, and gloriously over-the-top. The sword becomes Spuddy’s unstoppable determination, the broomstick his wild momentum, and the birds… well, the aliens, the radioactive fingers, and the robot toilets all fall into that “anything can happen” category.
