Enter a broken world in which girls are cursed at birth with terrible powers . . .
Set in a world which is governed in a draconian way by witches who maintain their power by curses girls at birth, this exciting novel deals with finding your power, relying on friendship and recognising the healing power of love.
Drinn’s curse is the worst yet for should she fall in love the world will be beset by unimaginable disaster. When she escapes the captivity she has been kept in and finds refuge in the city she joins forces with other cursed girls to battle the evil put in place by the witches. With each day bringing her closer to unleashing the full power of her curse can Drinn and her friends change the course of what has been determined for her?
This page turning, nail-biting adventure is fresh new teen romantic fantasy that relishes the power of girls and celebrates the ultimate life-giving power of love and friendship. With its surprising enemies to lovers storyline and ambitious fantasy world, this book is sure to delight fans of Samantha Shannon and Stephanie Garber.
Drinn has spent her life being moved from one foster family to another every year, never allowed to remain anywhere or put down roots. When she finally rebels, she finds herself lost and alone on the streets of an unknown city, unaware of the complex system of laws and curses that keeps the world turning. Falling in with a group of rebels, she discovers that she is vital to their efforts - she will destroy the system they live under, or keep it strong for another century.
What an imaginative story! Keeping Drinn ignorant for her first sixteen years allows the reader to discover what's happening alongside her. The world is immersive and complex, very well designed. Drinn and her fellow rebels have their work cut out for them as they fight for their futures.
The romance was pretty obvious (to me, who's read a lot of novels, but would probably be less so to a younger viewer!) but still a lot of fun to watch unfold. Drinn's friends are an eclectic group, but working together they become greater than the sum of their parts. I was surprised by some of the twists!
This is a great magical adventure story, and I highly recommend it.
