Isle of Ever by Jen Calonita

She has only two weeks to play the game and find the island. If she's successful, she'll break a two-hundred-year-old curse. If she fails, the fortune will be forfeited. And if she's not careful, she'll cross paths with someone else who is after the island's secrets, and who will stop at nothing to get them. Because, as it turns out, there's far more than a fortune at stake.
Days after her twelfth birthday, Everly "Benny" Benedict learns she's the heir to a fortune! But to collect the inheritance, she first has to play--and win--a game. Following clues that her ancestor left, Benny must locate a small island that vanished long ago, according to legend.
Bestselling and beloved author Jen Calonita delivers the first in a brand new series featuring a girl who will inherit a mysterious fortune if she can break a centuries-old curse!

I was surprised to reach the end of this and find a pretty serious cliffhanger! The blurb didn't say this was part of a series, and neither did the cover. So be aware, if you're picking it up, it stops dead at the end.

It's a great story, an Inheritance Games for the younger group with a touch of Pirates of the Caribbean sprinkled in. Benny is the kind of character we need, a spirited, clever girl who doesn't give up. The riddles are just the right level, tricky without being impossible, and the group she gathers around her as the story goes on is fantastic. I had guesses about a couple of them and I was right!

This is a really fun adventure story and I recommend it. Just keep in mind it is the first of a series!

Movie Recommendation: Harriet the Spy. Harriet is brave and clever, and like Benny that sometimes leads her into scrapes! Her interactions with her friend group echo this novel as well.

Book Recommendation: If you love riddles, adventure, and hidden secrets, Greenglass House by Kate Milford is a perfect companion read. Set in a mysterious old inn during the winter holidays, it follows Milo as he uncovers cryptic clues, hidden histories, and a long-buried treasure. Just like Benny, he has to solve a series of puzzles to uncover the truth.

The Isle of Ever publishes on the 4th of March, 2025. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
