No Place Left to Hide by Megan Lally

Brooke works hard to maintain perfect grades, perfect looks, a perfect life—especially after "the incident" that threatened everything. Getting into her dream university puts her that much closer to a fresh start. How can she say no to her best friend's coaxing to celebrate the good news...even if it means returning to the very beach that she's avoided all year?

Spending time by the bonfire with her crush is the perfect end to the night. Except leaving the party turns out to be only the beginning. A truck starts tailing Brooke along the isolated two-lane highway that winds through the woods toward home. And the dark night is about to bring out her darkest fears...

This is an amazing example of a book that starts as one thing and turns into something else! That twist also makes it really hard to review - I don't want to give anything away, as the joy of this book is slowly realising what's going on. I will attempt to review it without spoiling it!

The story is told in two timelines, the current one and the night of the 'incident' nine months earlier. We don't know at first what the incident was, but it's clearly something very big - Brooke is still worried about 'making up for it'. There are whispers about a classmate. As the timelines unspool together, we start to get a clearer picture of what really happened...

Books in two timelines don't always work very well for me, but this one was brilliant, with both timelines advancing at just the right pace to keep me riveted. Information from the older timeline informs the later one, and the moment when you realise what's been happening is amazing.

This is an amazing read for anyone who enjoys tense, fast paced mysteries.

Book recommendation: For another fast paced mystery that's gradually revealed, try Tell me What Really Happened by Chelsea Sedotti. Told through police interviews, it allows the reader to piece together the mystery.

Movie recommendation: For a suspenseful, slow-burn mystery with unexpected twists, try The Others. It builds tension in a similar way, keeping you guessing as the story unfolds.

No Place Left to Hide is available now. I received a free copy and am giving an honest answer.
