An EMP devastates the world. And the battle for survival begins…
When a powerful EMP blast knocks out power across the country, schoolteacher Molly, former Marine Colton, and the five students they’re supervising on a trip are trapped inside a prison. Surrounded by hardened criminals and with no safe exit, it doesn’t take long for a riot to throw everything into chaos.
Meanwhile, Deb, Colton’s ex-wife, is lucky enough to fall in with a group of determined survivors. But her good fortune quickly turns into a nightmare when her people are captured by human traffickers, led by a vicious madman.
Molly and Colton must escape to safety with their students, while Deb is forced to lead her fellow survivors in a daring revolt. But in this savage new world, danger lurks around every corner. Is there any hope for safety as what’s left of society collapses?
Loyalties are tested, new bonds are forged, and survival is a daily battle in this dying world.
This boxset contains books 1-6 of the Dark Nation series, a thrilling post-apocalyptic EMP saga.
I'm a bit of a sucker for EMP stories. It's a fascinating way to strip away everything we're used to and get to what's really important in life. It brings people to the brink and forces them into decisions they'd never have to make in normal life.
In case you weren’t sure, an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) is a burst of energy that can potentially disrupt or damage electrical and electronic systems. Anything powered by electricity, from computers and phones to lights and cars, can be vulnerable. (While experts are still arguing about the precise extent of the damage and the duration of the effects - due to the lack of real-world testing - stories like this typically assume that most devices with a power source could be affected.)
In this particular series, some of the characters are 'preppers' - people who prepare for extreme circumstances - while others work in tech, and so are able to explain to the other characters what's happening and just how bad things are likely to get. Each character reacts in a different way, reflecting what would likely happen in real life.
There's some useful information in here, things about what's important when the power's out and how to take care of yourself and so on, but it doesn't slow the pace of the story. Although this is six books in one, it flew by, with characters moving quickly from one situation to the next.
This is a great read, but be warned - you may be sucked into this intriguing genre and find yourself looking for more to learn!
