A Blooming Great Day by Úna Woods

We go down the steps and ... What’s happening here?

Why’s everyone wearing this old-fashioned gear?

Eccles Street looks like it did years ago.

A lady in a big poofy dress says hello.

It seems like just another ordinary day for Rosie and her grandad. But as soon as they step outside, they find themselves on a blooming great adventure around Dublin on the 16th of June, 1904!

Úna Woods has written a couple of books for O'Brien now, illustrating her own works in her bright, blocky style. In this book she's turned her attention to the work that any Irish person can name (but has probably not read) Joyce's Ulysses. Rosie and her grandfather chase a wayward hat through Joyce's Dublin, through various locations and past characters I'm not cultured enough to recognise.

It doesn't matter, though, because they're bright and cheerful and the fun of the story is in chasing the hat. There's a lot of little jokes and fun in the images and children will enjoy picking out different elements of them.

This is a great book and it's going to be really popular.

A Blooming Great Day publishes on the 6th of May, 2024. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
