A Drop of Golden Sun by Kate Saunders

It’s 1973 and 12-year-old Jenny is in shock. She’s just been cast as one of the lead roles in a feature film. She’s going to be a child actor! Soon she must jet off to France, to the idyllic Château Mouchotte, where she will join her film family: three other children and two renowned actors.

The glitz and glamour of being on set is a million miles away from Jenny’s normal life, but showbiz is never straightforward and there’s one fierce and famous actor that threatens the whole shoot. It’s up to Jenny and her friends to keep the peace and save the film. Jenny is about to experience a life-changing summer in the spotlight!

Ok, so this is not about The Sound of Music, ok? It's just about some kids making a movie about a family whose governess makes friends with them through music, and then marries their widowed father, and then they have to run away from the Nazis! But - uh - there's only four of them, and they go to Spain! See? Totally different!

I sound disapproving, but I actually really enjoyed this. It's a very gentle, easy story - they don't solve a mystery or uncover a murderer, they just have fun making a movie and learning about themselves and each other. Kate has managed to make a variety of character types work together nicely, and there are some surprises in the backstories.

I enjoyed the descriptions of the lazy, hot French days, and the food! Horse, as he's obviously meant to be, is clearly the nicest of the adults, but the others are fun as well. And I may have teared up a little at a certain spot, I won't spoil it but if you've read, you probably know...

This is a great option for anyone looking for a nice, gentle read, and I highly recommend it.

A Drop of Golden Sun publishes on the 7th of March, 2024. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
