It has been seven years since Cassie Morgan last saw her mother. Left at a dreary boarding school, she spends her days hiding from the school bully and reading forbidden story books about the world of Faerie.
Certain that her mother is still alive, Cassie is determined to find her, whatever the dangers, and runs away from school. Lost and alone, she is chased by a pack of goblins but, to her surprise, escapes with the help of a flying broom and a talking cat named Montague, who takes her to the cosy village of Hedgely.
Here she discovers that she comes from a family of witches, women who protect Britain from the denizens of Faerie, who are all too real and far more frightening than her story books suggest.
Any novel with hints of Stardust is always going to get a thumbs up from me. Skye wraps this in a story about a young girl searching for family, which is another winner - found family is a very powerful thing when it's used properly, and this is a great example of it.
I loved all the descriptions of the village, the house and the woods - really atmospherical and lovely.Skye has a great gift in that area.
Sadly, as often happens, a lot of the conflict comes from people not telling each other things - Cassie makes one attempt to tell her aunt something Very Important, while her aunt is flustered by something else, and then doesn't try again. It would have made more sense to me if there'd been a spell stopping her from saying it. But that's only a tiny niggle and it's such a common thing that others probably won't notice it.
I love Montague. Just saying. And I really enjoyed the cameo from a mythological figure I assume will be more important in later books...I can't wait to see how many people realise who it is!
There's still plenty unanswered at the end of the book, and I can't wait for the next one to see what adventures Cassie is going to have. Fantastic!
