When seventeen-year-old Zara escaped her father’s backwoods survivalist compound five years ago, she traded crossbows and skinning hides for electricity and video games…and tried to forget the tragedy that drove her away.
Until a malware attack on the United States electrical grids cuts off the entire country’s power.
In the wake of the disaster and the chaos that ensues, Zara is forced to call upon skills she thought she’d never use again—and her best bet to survive is to go back to the home she left behind. Drawing upon a resilience she didn’t know she had, Zara leads a growing group of friends on an epic journey across a crumbling country back to her father’s compound, where their only hope for salvation lies.
But with every step she takes, Zara wonders if she truly has what it takes to face her father and the secrets of her past, or if she’d be better off hiding in the dark.
I love post apoc, as a genre. I think they're fascinating. And I especially enjoy works set right as the apocalypse happens, so we can see our heroes adapting and changing to new circumstances. Power cuts as a form of apocalypse have come and gone a few times before; I've never heard the '9 out of 10 people will die' statistic before but I completely believe it.
I liked the story here. Zara was smart and determined, and she changed and learned as she went along. There were a few clever tips and tricks for people to learn. Granted, there were a couple of big coincidences as well, but we can forgive those in a novel.
I also liked that it touched - quite briefly, but more than most of this type - on the trouble some medical patients would run into as soon as the power runs out. People on life support, people dependant on refrigerated medication, even people taking anti depressants would very quickly have trouble once the power and supply lines go out.
I figured out what was happening a little bit before Zara did, but in her defense I wasn't starved, injured and exhausted. I would love to read a sequel to this - whether the power comes back or not, the world is going to be very different, and I'd love to find out what happened to our heroes after the end of the story.
A great read I think people will really enjoy.
Gone Dark publishes on the 12th of April. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
