The Hive by Barry Lyga and Morgan Baden

Some few years into the future, social media has been aggregated on a government controlled platform. Everyone is on it, if they're anyone. The system tracks everything, and anyone can like, dislike...or condemn. And if you get enough condemns, the #Hivemob takes over.

Cassie believes in the Hive. Things are so much better now; no doxxing, no trolling. Unless it's in service of the #Hivemob, of course. And when she ends up on the wrong side of it, she realises just how many things don't add up about the Hive...

Bringing the idea of rough justice into the not so distant future, this novel is a terrifying look at how social media might turn in the next few years. It's not even that divorced from reality; Twitter mobs are increasingly part of the fabric of social media. This shows just how awful the concept can be when applied on a larger scale.

I enjoyed the story. Cassie is a good heroine, mostly. The ending nearly killed me, but I can see it's the best fit for this story, annoyingly. It did drag a little in spots, and the author was pretty clear that Cassie is with THIS guy, NOT this other guy, alright guys? But since I mostly ignore the relationships anyway, it didn't bother me too much.

A great read, and I'll be looking out for more from these authors in the future.
