My First Book of Irish Bugs

Ladybird, butterfly, snail, grasshopper, spider, fly.

Introduces the youngest readers to the tiny creatures that creep, crawl, wriggle and fly all over Ireland!

O'Brien's First Steps series is well estanlished at this point. Kids love the bright colours, simple pictures - one item per page, no background or confusing extras - and the simple introduction to every day things. I adore that the first book produced was GAA, not the more expected Animals or anything - it's very Irish!

And that Irishness continues into this volume. Even the title, Irish Bugs rather than Irish Insects, is very Irish and child friendly! The pictures are photos rather than illustrations, creepily accurate and close up - I may have skipped a couple of pages, let's just pretend that's normal - and I learned that we have lacewings and shield bugs in Ireland, which I can't say for sure I knew before. So even (nominal) adults can learn from these great books!

These are sturdy, bright and the perfect gift for a young child. Now we just need the bilingual version, or a boxset of all five volumes for Christmas!

My First Book of Irish Bugs publishes on the 3rd of July, 2023. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
