Wider than the Sea by Serena Molloy and George Ermos

The powerful tale of a girl who feels broken, and the dolphin who makes her whole. A story of friendship, hope and self-discovery, perfect for readers aged 9+.

Ró finds school impossible. She knows people think she's shy - and stupid. But when she goes to the bay each afternoon to watch the dolphin leap through the water, she finds the strength to keep going. Then the dolphin disappears, and everything starts falling apart.

Can Ró overcome her fears to find him?

This is a fantastic read, touching on a lot of the difficulties of growing up. There are obvious influences here (::coughFungicough::) but the story is very much its own thing. Ró is wonderful, a heartfelt, very honest character, and the story itself is quick and easy to read.

(I do wonder - and I don't know, I don't claim any knowledge in this area - will the offset lines and layout make it harder for children with dyslexia to read? That would be some sad irony.)

My copy says that the artwork isn't final, but I really hope it is, because it's gorgeous, catching the mood of each page perfectly. It really adds to this already wonderful story.

I enjoyed this very much and I can't wait to be able to sell it. I think it's going to do really well.

Wider than the Sea publishes on the 30th of March, 2023. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
