Gulliver by Jonathon Swift, Mary Webb and Lauren O'Neill

New paperback edition of this modern retelling of a perennial favourite, with illustrations by Lauren O'Neill!

Gulliver’s Travels is a memorable classic that takes you into the amazing worlds travelled by Lemuel Gulliver. In Lilliput, he is a giant compared to the tiny people there, followed by the reverse in Brobdingnag, where Gulliver finds himself in a country of giants. Full of humour and adventure, these exciting stories have survived the centuries and are now retold and re-imagined with thrilling illustrations.

Like most of us, my childhood version of Gulliver's Travels only featured Lilliput. I was (mumble) old when I realised he visited several other lands as well, much like Sinbad in his adventures. (Coincidentally, my first exposure to both Sinbad and Gulliver was in the same place - the Storyteller Magazine of the 80s.)

This version doesn't cover all the lands, but it does feature Brogdignab as well as Lilliput. The language has been slightly modernised, enough to make it easier for modern children to follow without making it seem out of place. The old fashioned illsutrations are a highlight, perfectly matching the tone and adding detail that's lacking in the text.

(I have to say, I didn't know there was so much potty humour in the story! My childhood version left that out for some reason...)

I really enjoyed this. I'd love to see the other worlds adapted in a later volume! This was a great read and it's a fab introduction to Gulliver and his adventures.

Gulliver is available now. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
