This Wicked Fate by Kalynn Bayron

How much would you risk to save the ones you love? Would you tempt even the most dangerous fate?

Briseis has one chance to save her mother, but she'll need to do the impossible: find the last fragment of the deadly Absyrtus Heart. If she is to locate the missing piece, she must turn to the blood relatives she's never known, learn about their secret powers, and take her place in their ancient lineage. Briseis is not the only one who wants the Heart, and her enemies will stop at nothing to fulfill their own ruthless plans. The fates tell of a truly dangerous journey, one that could end in more heartache, more death. Bolstered by the sisterhood of ancient magic, can Briseis harness her power to save the people she loves most?

It's one of my famous mixed reviews! Although I did enjoy the story, I feel that the pacing was very uneven for the sake of artificially rachetting up the tension towards the end.

(Insert standard 'argh there's no recap!' part here.)

Briseis remains a fantastic character. The use of Greek mythology is amazing. I thought Circe was a little flat, but the others were fantastic. The timing was just so weird. I don't want to spoil it, and maybe you'll like it better than I did! It just didn't work very well for me. As well as the timing, one character undergoes a massive change near the end and we don't find out how they're dealing with it beyond a vague mention, which I would have liked.

I'll be watching out for more books by Kalynn, because I think she's an amazing writer, and this is still a great read. It's just maybe a six instead of a nine or ten like the last one.

This Wicked Fate publishes on the 21st June, 2022. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
