Escape Room by Maren Stoffels

Alissa, Sky, Cleo, and Miles just wanted something to do on a Friday night, so they signed up for an Escape Room. They have one hour to find clues, crack codes, and figure out puzzles. The Game Master told them they can always leave the game. But what if that's not true? What if the Game Master has no intention of letting them out?

Underlined are the newest successor to Point Horror. Like Point Horror, they are short, fast paced horror or thriller stories. In this one, four teens with a variety of romantic entanglements enter an Escape Room, only to find themselves trapped at the whim of their psychotic Game Master. With injuries mounting and the Game Master exploiting the cracks between them, they have to find a way out as quickly as possible.

This is a very fast read, and as a consequence it doesn't go very in depth on anything. As I was reading, I didn't really feel any urgency on behalf of the kids. I was also a bit confused about Mint. Apart from her, this is a normal contemporary setting, and there's no explanation even attempted for her.

However, I enjoyed the twists, and I didn't see most of them coming. The final identity of the Game Master was quite a surprise, although I'd figured out the connection between them a while before that. The ending was nicely done, wrapping everything up very quickly and adding a touch of fear for the future.

A good read, but not as in depth as some.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
