P.S. You're the Worst by Chloe Seager

✦ BLURB ✦

Everyone knows the death card in a tarot reading isn’t a literal death sentence. Well, everyone except Becky.

Becky is not doing well. Her dreaded thirtieth birthday is looming, and she can’t help thinking she’s falling behind in life. Her (smug) friends are all planning weddings, buying houses, or starting their own businesses, but not Becky. She still lives with her mom, hates her job, doesn’t speak to her father, and—despite numerous dates—hasn’t moved on from her ex-boyfriend. Things can’t get much worse.

Becky doesn’t believe in the arcane, but armed with a gift card and a desperate need for guidance, she visits a tarot reader… who tells her she’s going to die. Convinced she’s a goner and panicked about having done nothing with her life, Becky finally takes action. She writes a series of letters to the people she loves unloading all the things she’s been holding back. And she waits.

But in the morning, she’s not dead. And worse, the mail is already reaching people’s doorsteps. Will the letters be the wake-up call Becky needs, or just the next step in a never-ending downward spiral?

With sparkling wit and compassionate insight, Chloe Seager chronicles Becky’s ups and downs as she figures out how she wants to show up in life—for herself and for the people she loves.

Death cards, life letters, and laughing at your own mess.

Pre-Reading Thoughts

I was intrigued by the idea of someone panicking over a literal reading of the Death card. Becky’s life is already a mess by conventional standards, so seeing her spiral (and hopefully learn something) sounded like a riot — and secretly, maybe a little relatable.

Post-Reading

As I thought…
Becky’s journey is chaotic, funny, and surprisingly tender. Seager nails the mix of anxiety, self-doubt, and sharp wit, making Becky someone you want to yell at, laugh with, and root for all at once.

It surprised me by…
How much heart it has. Beneath the comedy and misadventures, there’s a real look at what it means to face your own life honestly, to confront relationships, and to start making choices—even if they’re messy and imperfect. The letters are a genius device, blending humor and emotional resonance.

MUSIC PAIRING

  • 🎵 Featured Song: “Everything is Alright” by Motion City Soundtrack — chaotic, ironic, and totally Becky.

  • 🎶 Vibe Album: A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships by The 1975 — modern, messy, and emotionally clever.

  • 🎧 Artist Recommendation: Phoebe Bridgers — witty, heart-on-sleeve, and occasionally devastating.

VIBE CHECK

  • Colour Palette: muted pastels with unexpected pops of neon (chaotic but charming).

  • Soundtrack: indie pop with a side of sarcasm.

  • Season: late winter — bleak, funny, and full of possibilities.

  • Mood: exasperated optimism.

  • Scent: coffee with a hint of existential dread.

TAROT PULL

From the Light Seer’s Tarot: Death — a card of endings, transformation, and new beginnings. Becky’s literal interpretation is hilarious, but the deeper message shines through: life doesn’t wait for perfection, and sometimes you have to face the end of one chapter to start writing the next.

For fans of:

  • Book: Faking It by Jennifer E. Smith — witty, heartfelt contemporary fiction.

  • TV/Film: Fleabag — flawed, funny, and chaotic, but utterly human.
