What's That Spooky Sound? By Gerry Daly

It’s the morning after a big storm. Badger, red deer, owl and pygmy shrew hear a strange sound. It’s coming from across the stream, beyond the big tree, over the rocks … Maybe it’s from the big dark hole? One by one, they set off to investigate.

Just what is that sound? It’s kind of … spooky …

A cosy, suspenseful adventure for curious little ears and eyes.

Pre-Reading Thoughts
After a storm, the forest is full of mysterious noises. I was curious how Daly would turn the spooky suspense of the unknown into something safe and engaging for young children.

Post-Reading

As I thought…
The story is sweet and charming. The animals - badger, red deer, owl, and pygmy shrew - are drawn with a lively expressiveness that immediately feels approachable for young readers. Each animal’s personality comes through without losing realism.

It surprised me by…
The illustrations are full of little hidden details worth returning for again and again. The sense of suspense builds gradually, leading to a gentle, satisfying reveal at the end. The balance of spooky and sweet is perfect - the story is adventurous without being scary.
