The Two Lives of Ema by Julia Pérez Villegas – Silvina Eduardo

Alex knows that his dog Ema loves to eat and is afraid of storms, but he doesn’t know what her life was like before he rescued her.

Who did she live with? When was she born? What was her name? Alex knows that things happened to Ema in her previous life that she’d rather forget, and that in this new life, Alex will help her do just that.

A book about animal respect, unconditional love, and second chances. Put on the magic glasses and discover Ema’s past.

This is a really unique book. Pictures are designed in two layers, now and then, representing Ema's two lives - one where she is happy and living with a family, and her previous life on the streets and in shelters. The 'now' images are in red, and when a reader puts on the included magic glasses - red plastic - the images vanish, leaving her past life on view. So a spread showing Ema and her owner playing happily in a field 'now' becomes an empty field with a dog behind bars when viewed through the glasses.

It's very cleverly done, and it's a topic that should be spoken about; however, I have to recommend that adults read it through and look at the images before sharing it with children. In particular, a spread featuring a friendly visitor to the house becomes a figure threatening the dog with a stick when viewed through the glasses. Some children might find this very hard to understand or look at.

I do love the idea behind this book, and learning more about the real Ema and about how to help animals was a lovely bonus. With care and conversation, this could become a cherished book in many households - a gentle reminder that love can rewrite even the hardest past.
