Evil Duck and the Nest of Destiny by Chris Judge

Long ago, the ancient inhabitants of Planet Duck created three magical objects to protect their world – the Egg of Time, the Feather of Fortune and the Nest of Destiny. Individually, they each bring great power to their owner, but when all three are brought together they become the most powerful weapon in the galaxy, and Evil Duck has been searching for these items ever since he found out about them. Foiled with the Feather of Fortune, he’s now on the trail of the Nest of Destiny … and he’s teamed up with popstar Ed Quackers with the promise of making him the most famous popstar EVER! Can Eddie and Flo stop Evil Duck and his minions once again, before it’s too late?

Ducks, chaos and pop stars, oh my!

Pre Reading

Illustrated novels are gaining in popularity every day. Evil Duck is a newer series, but it's already gained some very loyal fans who are eager for this second book! I was excited to find out what it was all about.

Post Reading
As I expected
The story is clever, funny, a bit ridiculous in spots, and moves along at a good rate. The drawings are clear enough to follow, with enough detail for kids to enjoy noticing little jokes and background funny bits. The writing is simple enough that a child struggling with the words can probably figure it out by looking at the illustrations, always a great confidence booster and one of the best things about illustrated books!

I haven't read the first one, but I didn't feel lost - the backstory is deftly woven into the story, so I knew what was going on and what the history was. This is a great, funny book and it's going to be very popular with young readers. Bring on the next one!

(I don't usually do TV recs in this age group, but I do have to recommend Spy Kids! Readers who enjoy this book would like the fun, gadgets and mystery in those movies.)
