Snails of the Unexpected by Terrie Chilvers

Shapeshifting snails on a mission to save the world! Struck by lightning one fateful night, Fergus and Shelby receive the power to transform into whatever they want: custard, crisp packets, giant plastic crabs – you name it, they can change into it. And with a slug uprising taking place, things are about to get even stranger… Can Fergus and Shelby save humankind from being turned into lettuces by an evil slug masquerading as the Prime Minister? Expect the unexpected in the best thing since sliced cucumber!

Shape shifting snails battling evil slugs for the right to their corner of the garden! A plot happening inside No 10 Downing Street! An obsession with empty crisp packets!

...well, ok, not really that last one. But all the stuff about slugs and snails is true! Fergus and Shelby just want to hang out in peace in their garden and eat leaves, but the slugs want to take over every garden in the country and turn them into slug spas. It will take all their shapeshifting skill, some brilliant plans and a group of friends to help them overcome their nemesisisis.

This is a brilliantly funny book, full of jokes for both children and parents. The shapeshifting ability is used to its fullest, and there are some really clever moments. Sadly the blurb spoils the big Prime Minister reveal, but kids won't care about that. The book is illustrated, but not as heavily as Dogman, making it a great next step up for children who are ready to move on a little bit. Fantastic read, I hope there's more to come!

Snails of the Unexpected publishes on the 3rd of April, 2025. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
