It’s King Winter’s birthday, and he wants it to be really special. He wants all of his brothers and sisters to be there: King Summer, Queen Spring and Queen Autumn.
But the leaves and the trees whisper a warning, and as the four play magical games, something strange begins to happen outside.
King Winter hasn’t seen his siblings for many years and he misses them terribly. He decides to invite them all to his birthday celebration. When Queen Spring, Queen Summer and King Autumn arrive, the party is full of joy, but their reunion brings more than just happiness—the weather outside starts to go very strange. Snow falls alongside blooming flowers, the animals are terribly confused, and the sun shines while leaves turn golden. Realizing that their presence together is causing the seasons to clash, the siblings know they must part once again. But they leave with hearts full of warmth, knowing that the memories of this special gathering will keep them close, even when they’re far apart.
King Winter is forced to learn that we can't always have what we want, but that lesson is softened by the knowledge that love and memories can bridge the distance between us and those we care about. The story conveys this message in a gentle, heartfelt way, making it accessible and meaningful for young readers. It’s a perfect balance of whimsy and bittersweetness, reminding us that while life can be full of fleeting moments, the bonds we share with loved ones are lasting.
The illustrations are a standout feature of this book. Inspired by Russian art, they are vibrant, detailed, and full of life, with each page offering something new to discover. The bright colors and intricate designs bring the magical world of the seasons to life, making the reader feel as though they’ve stepped into a storybook landscape. These illustrations not only complement the text but enhance the emotional depth of the story, adding layers of meaning through their visual storytelling. My favourite spread is the two bears, one trying to hibernate and one trying to wake up and find a companion! It's a perfect illustration of the story.
This book is a special addition to any child’s library. Its blend of a heartwarming story, stunning illustrations, and a message about love and connection makes it perfect for sharing with children, particularly during the winter months or as a cosy bedtime story. Whether read aloud or explored on one’s own, children will want to have this one over and over again, reminding readers of the power of family, memory, and the changing seasons.
