Blog Tour: The Only Way Out is Death by Varun Gwalani

Twelve powerful people are kidnapped and imprisoned in an empty hotel.

Each one of them has three choices:

Live out the rest of their days peacefully in the hotel,

Die by suicide so the rest of their companions can go free,

Or murder one of their companions so they alone can go free.

The Only Way Out is Death follows the story of these twelve people from the perspective of a young lawyer, Kiriaki, told as the events unfold. She has to forge messy alliances, navigate complex relationships and feuds, and, above all, try to stay alive. Meanwhile, the mastermind of this death game is lurking just out of view, watching them closely, making sure they are primed for murder.

Will Kiriaki find the mastermind before it's too late for her?

Will she outmaneouvre the cutthroats before they cut her throat?

There are twelve selfish lives in the hotel.

Will it end in twelve selfish deaths?

What a crazy read! I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but this was non-stop. Everything kicks off immediately the book starts, there's no padding, and the lack of padding continues all the way through. Nothing here is not necessary to the story.

If you've read many other reviews by me, you'll know that historically, when there's a large group of people I have trouble telling them apart. That was true here as well, when we have twelve characters, despite a scene where they all introduce themselves. However - I don't think this is a spoiler - the number of characters starts going down after a while, and by the end I was confident in who everyone was.

This would make a great movie, as it's a fascinating premise! (And they wouldn't need very many sets.) It's well written, fast paced and really intriguing - apart from once, I didn't guess anything before Kiriaki, but the clues were all there looking back! If you like a thriller, this is definitely one for you.
