O'Brien's series of fairytale retellings set in different Irish cities is going from strength to strength. As with previous entries, the story visits different locations around Cork, while retelling the story in a very clever way; the Three Bears are trying to find the perfect presents for a very special friend, but they each want to choose different things. They need Goldilocks to find one that's just right! The end of the story has a very satisfying twist, which I won't spoil here.
I'm not very familiar with Cork myself, but I asked someone who is, and he said that he can recognise several landmarks from the illustrations; he especially picked out the church in Cobh as being instantly recognisable. He also loved a few background details, like the newspaper boy shouting "Echo!" and the uphill slant on the roads!
Even without recognising those details, I thought this was a really funny, clever story - and I applaud Goldilocks picking the panto, the highest form of entertainment! - and I look forward to setting this alongside its' sister titles.
