The Only Girl in Town by Ally Condie (huge spoilers ahead)

For July Fielding, nothing has been the same since that summer before senior year.

Once , she had Alex to be her loyal best friend, the one who always had her back. She had Sydney, who pushed her during every cross country run, and who sometimes seemed to know July better than she knew herself. And she had Sam. Sam, who told her she was everything and left her breathless with his touch.

Now , July is alone. Every single person in her small town of Lithia has disappeared. No family. No Alex or Sydney. No Sam. July’s only chance at unraveling the mystery of their disappearance is a series of objects, each a reminder of the people she loved most. And a mysterious GET TH3M BACK.

I love the idea of this, it's exactly my kind of story, and the writing was good; we get just enough information, at just about the right speed, and July is an interesting character (I id find some of the chapter transitions very abrupt, as some are very short.) My problem lies in the fact that nothing is ever explained. Did the universe shift itself to teach July a lesson? Did she suffer a psychotic break? A particularly vivid dream? We're not told (not in my proof anyway, as always the finished product may vary.) Some readers won't care about that, they'll read for the language or the story, and that's great! It's well written and it is a great idea. But I always want to know why, and knowing there's no explanation here has soured me on this book, I'm afraid.

If you think you can deal with never really knowing why, this is a great read I recommend. Just be aware of what you're getting into.

The Only Girl in Town publishes on the 19th September, 2023. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
