The Magic Feather by Sandra Dieckmann

Little Bear has a secret – deep inside, he feels nothing like a real bear. An empowering story about finding your own special spark, woven with magic and wonder by Sandra Dieckmann, the creator of Leaf and Waiting for Wolf.

Little Bear knows that soon the time will come for him to choose his special bear name – but how will he know what it should be, when he has no idea what makes him special?

One night the wondrous firebird swoops down and places a magic feather in Little Bear’s paw. Could this enchanted feather help him discover who he truly is . . . or was the answer inside him all along?

Sandra's Waiting for Wolf is one of my favourite picture books, if one that still makes me cry when I read it. The Magic Finger, though a lighter read, is every bit as good. With a soft story about believing in yourself and knowing who you are, this is a fantastic addition to any bookshelf.

Sandra's illustrations are more or less realistic - these animals aren't wearing clothes or using tea cups, they are animals. The colour palatte is mostly dull, muted colours - with the exception of the firebird and its' feather, which glow against the dark backgrounds. I love the gold highlights on the cover. Fox makes a visit from Wolf, too, and it's lovely to see her happy again.

This is a fabulous read and will hopefully do really well, as it's a beautiful book with a great moral.

The Magic Feather is available now. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
