The Game by Scott Kershaw

To save their life, you have to play.

Across the globe, five strangers receive a horrifying message from an unknown number.

THE PERSON YOU LOVE MOST IS IN DANGER.

To save them, each must play The Game – a sinister unknown entity that has a single rule: there can only be one winner.

IF YOU LOSE, YOUR LOVED ONE WILL DIE.

But what is The Game – and why have they been chosen?

There’s only one thing each of them knows for sure: they’ll do anything to win…

WELCOME TO THE GAME. YOU’VE JUST STARTED PLAYING.

It's time for one of my famous mixed reviews!

The idea of this story is great. The first few chapters, introducing us to different characters, were great. And then...things started to inch, very slowly, forward. It took what felt like a very long time for anything to happen.

The resolution could have been great, but we, the readers, had to be lied to - not mislead, in my opinion, lied to - to make it work. Plus, there are story threads introduced and left dangling at the end, things that are maybe not necessary to the outcome but we'd still like to know about.

However, I can't fault the language or set up. Everything is introduced nicely, we know just enough about everyone, and although the story itself takes a long time to get anywhere, the chapters are short and speedy.  It's such a clever idea, too, it really is.

I'll try a book by Scott Kershaw again, because I think he does have talent; this specific book didn't suit me, but hopefully another one will.

The Game is available now. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
