Yesterday Crumb is no ordinary girl. She was born with fox ears that have cursed her to a lonely life working in the circus and her origins are a complete mystery. But she is about to escape into the adventure of a lifetime when she learns that she’s a strangeling who’s lost her magic.

Yesterday starts to rediscover her magic and to feel a sense of belonging. But a mysterious figure of darkness is working hard to ensure her new life comes crashing down – and it all starts with a deadly shard of ice in Yesterday’s heart…

Look at that cover! Those colours are absolutely amazing. I love it.
And luckily, the story inside is even better. Yesterday is a fantastic heroine, asking all the right questions at exactly the right times. The found family she joins is brilliant; it's one of my favourite tropes and it's done really well here. Everyone has a very specific role and they meld beautifully.
The story has plenty of twists and turns, some wonderfully satisfying moments, and, surprisingly for this kind of book, a nice long coda after the action is all over. Usually the story ends almost as soon as the action does, but of course there's always more that can be written, and I really enjoyed the ending here.
This is the start of a series, and I'm very much looking forward to reading more of Yesterday's adventures and her efforts to solve the mysteries of her own life. Kids are definitely going to love this - and probably start asking for some very strange teas!
(Also, I realise this was likely completely unintentional, but in the movie Labyrinth, the Goblin King as played by David Bowie had Heterochromia...I love the idea that it was so he could see in both worlds!)
