Blog tour: Prey by Cheryl Elaine

What starts out as a night of celebration for Aimee soon turns into a nightmare.
Snatched by cruel, sadistic monsters ,she’s thrown into a metal container, among other victims too frightened to make a sound.

The game-keepers force everyone to play.

Detective Johnson is one step away from catching the killers. Wrestling with his instincts as a father to serve justice his own way, this is no ordinary case for him.
Can he stop the vile sadists before they destroy more young girls, as well as his own daughter?

As Aimee’s ordeal worsens, she looses her grip on reality, having to face the most evil monsters mankind has produced if she has any chance of escape.

It's time to find a different way to play...
PLEASE NOTE THIS BOOK WAS PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED UNDER THE TITLE NO ORDINARY GIRL

Previously published as No Ordinary Girl, Cheryl has given us an extract of this novel to whet all our appetites!

My stomach started to turn and I began to retch. I gulped but I couldn’t stop myself; the vile taste pushed up my throat. I moved onto my knees… Ugh, I can taste tequila. I vomited between my legs, the retching sensation pulling the muscles in my stomach. The sour taste brought back more memories of the previous night.

Kelly, my dance-all-night buddy… My chest pulsated with anxiety. Oh, God, I hope you’re okay. Kelly wouldn’t have willingly left the club without me. That would have broken our code. I have to find her… ‘Kelly. Kelly…’ I whispered to the peering eyes. There was no reply.

‘Kelly!’ A little louder this time. The only sound was the echo of my voice.

I was out of my mind with worry, not just for Kelly, but also the situation I’d found myself in.

I hadn’t been aware of any danger, at first. Rico and Rafi were good-looking Hispanic guys; they made a good pair. They were charming and witty, with fine physiques, dark hair and well-groomed goatee beards. Our meeting hadn’t appeared premeditated, it just seemed to happen. Innocent enough. At least, that’s what I’d thought.

I recalled all of us having a good time. They’d led us to the bar and it was clear they were regulars with a tab, as I couldn’t remember any money being passed over the bar and I never had to put my hand in my purse. They’d treated us like royalty.

I recalled feeling drowsy and unsteady on my feet. Rico was talking to Mo before kindly guiding me outside for some air. Was it through a back door? I could remember Rico having to hold me up as I was finding it harder to support myself.

I didn’t remember any passing traffic or the street lights, only of being guided through a kitchen. At that point, my vision became hazy, like everything blended together into one huge flash of light. Then the light was gone and only darkness remained.

I’d become disorientated, with legs like jelly; I could hardly lift them off the ground. Rico lifted me into his arms, holding me in the way one would cradle a baby. As hard as I tried to remember, not another detail of the night came to me.

I tried to visualise my last steps. My mind went over and over everything. I gripped my head in frustration. Rico had been with me when my legs became like Bambi’s. We were at the door…then a van pulled up. Or did it? I’d left Kelly sat on a barstool, huddled next to Rafi. She’d looked comfy, her head was leant against his shoulder…then she was gone.

I must have fallen asleep for a little while. I woke, suddenly, in a cold sweat. The fright that this wasn’t a nightmare, that I was living it, took hold again. With nothing else to do, my mind wandered again. Had I been drugged? Surely not. But why couldn’t I recall anything? I didn’t want to believe it, but it appeared to be the only explanation. I’d always been one to handle my drink and I certainly wasn’t the kind of girl easily influenced into doing anything against my will. Tears flowing, I accepted the theory that we’d been drugged as the most likely.
