Paige Miller is determined to take her basketball team to the state championship, maybe even beyond. But as March Madness heats up, Paige falls deathly ill. Days later, she wakes up attached to an IV and learns that the whole world has perished. Everyone she loves, and all of her dreams for the future—they’re gone.
But Paige is a warrior, so she pushes through her fear and her grief. And as she gets through each day—scrounging for food, for shelter, for safety—Paige encounters a few more young survivors. Together, they might stand a chance. But as they struggle to endure their new reality, they learn that the apocalypse did not happen by accident. And that there are worse things than being alone.
I really liked this, with a couple of story decisions I wasn't sure about.
First, the things I loved. Paige was great, I loved her reactions. She reacted like I think most teens would in her situation. For some reason, I loved that this book acknowledged what birds would do in this situation; I read quite a lot of this kind of book, and most don't bother thinking about birds. It's all about rats generally.
Not so good; out of every house they could have stopped in, Paige and Trey just happened to be on the same street as another survivor? And Paige's mother took an action that saved her, but didn't do the same for any of the rest of her family?
These are very minor things, though. I loved the story, the twists, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one (yes, it's a series!) although at least this one didn't end on a total cliffhanger. I can't wait for more adventures with our mismatched crew of survivors.
