When I start writing a new book I don’t really do much research. For Baby Teeth I read a book or two about the history of vampires but as my vampires are a little different I can’t say they helped much, they were super interesting though!
I don’t really seek out books about the same topics I’m writing about but I do try to find books with a similar mood or tone to the one I’m trying to achieve. Here are some books that inspired or helped me in writing Baby Teeth!
If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio
If We Were Villains is my absolute favourite book. It’s set in a prestigious arts college and follows a group of Shakespeare students. It has theatre and murder and is delishly dark. I reread it when I’m having trouble writing and it always makes me feel inspired. My copy is so tabbed and annotated that I don’t think anyone could even make out the text!
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
This is another one of my favourite books, it’s so atmospheric and has one of the best protagonists I’ve read. We follow Merricat who likes her sister Constance, and Richard Plantagenet, and Amanita phalloides, the death-cap mushroom and whose family was murdered six years ago.
I reread this one while working on Baby Teeth, Shirley Jackson’s writing always inspires me and this time was no different.
Mary Oliver
Mary Oliver is my favourite poet, I even have a line of her poetry tattooed on my arm. She writes about nature in a way that makes you feel like you’re in it, it’s immersive and so beautiful. I read her poetry a lot when I was preparing to write the forest scenes in Baby Teeth.
Sleepwalking by Meg Wolitzer
I read this one in the middle of writing Baby Teeth and I loved how dark and absorbing it is. Reading it definitely helped me create the mood I really really wanted for Baby Teeth. It follows Claire, one of three “death girls”, each of whom is obsessed with a different poet and their suicide. The girls dress in all black and meet at night to read their poets' work by candlelight. Claire, however, takes her obsession to another level and her life becomes completely entangled with her favourite poet’s.
