The Howling Hag by Nicki Thornton

When there’s a murder in Twinhills and a hag is heard howling at the inn, Raven Charming realizes she may not be the only secret witch in the village.

She could have a rival – one who practises the worst kind of magic. With the help of amateur sleuth, Mortimer Scratch, and Nightshade, a talking cat with a feline sense of detection, she sets out to solve what’s been going on …

First things first; this is a follow up to other books by the same author, featuring one character from those books and otherwise new characters. I haven't read the others and didn't feel lost or confused at all; this just read like a stand alone, not a continuation.

Second things second; this is a really funny novel with a very serious heart. There are some great lessons here, but kids won't feel like they're being lectured at; they'll be too busy laughing and following Raven and Morti's adventures.

Nightshade is definitely my favourite character...I love cats and sarcasm, so there was never going to be a question, really...but Raven and Morti are amazing, too. I know Nightshade was only passing by, but I do hope the three of them can get together for more adventures. I think there's scope there for plenty more to happen in the future.

Really funny, great lesson underneath, and kids will love it. I think this one is going to do well.

The Howling Hag Mystery publishes on the 1st of July 2021. I received a free copy and am giving an honest review.
