Based on East o'the Sun, West o'the Moon, this is a magical story ranging over most of North Europe as Rose tries to find the White Bear she inadvertantly banished into the hands of the Troll Queen.
Novels based on folk tales can be very hit or miss, but this is a definite hit. The tone is magical and the story moves at just the right pace; it would be easy for things to drag in the second quarter, when Rose is in the Bear's castle, but the mystery of everything keeps the story chugging along. It reminds me of Beauty by Robin McKinley in tone.
This is perfect for anyone who enjoys folktales and is ready for something a little more complicated. Perfect.
Rose is an unusual child, a North Child. For Rose was born facing north, and the old stories say she is destined to travel far from home on a dangerous journey. Making a pact with an enormous white bear, Rose travels on his back to a mysterious castle that holds a dark enchantment, a darker temptation, and the key to her true destiny…
